National Primary Care Week 2005
NONPF is again a supporting organization for National Primary Care Week (NPCW),  an annual event to highlight the importance of primary care and to bring health care professionals together to discuss and learn about generalist and interdisciplinary health care, particularly its impact on and importance to underserved populations.   This year NPCW 2005 will be held from October 16-22, 2005 with a theme of "Breaking Down Barriers: Health Literacy in Community Health".  NONPF urges NP faculty to identify or encourage student leaders to organize events on your campus.  Interested students can sign up to be a leader at http://www.amsa.org/programs/npcw/signup.cfm.

NPCW student leaders are eligible to apply for a $200 grant to support a school project.  Student leaders can also apply for an additional $100 if they collaborate with an Area Health Education Center or National Health Service Corps Ambassador.  Special consideration will be given to applications that fit the following criteria: new projects, interdisciplinary projects, collaborative projects (with AHECs/Ambassadors and other schools), and originality.

Applications must be submitted by September 2, 2005 to qualify for the first funding deadline, or by September 23, 2005 to qualify for the second deadline.   Grant guidelines are available from http://www.amsa.org/programs/npcw/schoolapp.cfm.  For additional information, contact a NPCW staff member at NPCW@www.amsa.org.

2005 Annual Meeting Highlighted Celebration, Reflection, and Innovation

Approaching 500 in registration, the NONPF 2005 annual meeting had a record attendance to mark the organization’s 25th birthday.  The Saturday birthday gala celebration included a slide presentation by the Archives Committee on the leadership history in the organization.  As NONPF President Ann L. O’Sullivan noted in comments during the gala, “NONPF has grown significantly from the days of the banquet being held in the president’s back yard!”

The meeting highlighted the theme of Transforming the Future:  Excellence Through Innovation.  Dr. O’Sullivan kicked off the meeting with an inspiring presidential address in which she underscored the significance of understanding change for transforming the future. Other plenary sessions included provocative speakers on topics supporting the theme:  Dr. Marilyn Chow of Kaiser Permanente and the RWJ Executive Nurse Fellows Program discussed future trends in health care and the related imperatives for nursing education to sustain innovation;  Patricia Kappas-Larson of Evercare/United Healthcare described leadership opportunities for NPs through competency in practice and innovation; Dr. Cheryl Cox presented her “Interaction Model of Client Health Behavior” and translating practice into research; and a panel of Drs. Michael Carter, Lucy Marion, Ann L. O’Sullivan, and Joanne Pohl discussed the innovation of the practice doctorate and NONPF’s preliminary work in shaping competencies for the NP.  Opportunities for audience participation in the sessions and during the Friday roundtable luncheon yielded rich discussion and feedback for the NONPF leadership on critical issues within NP education.

CD recordings with the PowerPoint presentations for most sessions are available to purchase from InteractAV.  Access the order form here.  Additional descriptions and scenes of the meeting will be available from the conference page.
