President

Ann O'Sullivan Ann O'Sullivan, PhD, CRNP, CPNP, FAAN
University of Pennsylvania
Term: 2004-2006

Dr. O'Sullivan has served on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania since 1972, where she and two colleagues began the Family Nurse Clinician Program in 1973.  Currently, she is a Professor of Primary Care Nursing, Program Director of the Family Nurse Practitioner, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, and Health Leadership Programs, and Co-Director of the Center for Urban Health Research.  She is the Chair of the ANA-American Nurses Foundation, Partners in Prevention Program for Adolescents, and holds several other state and national offices. She maintains a part-time practice at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Joanne Pohl Joanne Pohl, PhD, APRN, BC, FAAN
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
Term: 2004-2006

Dr. Pohl has served on the faculty of the University of Michigan School of Nursing for 12 years. She is currently Associate Professor and Associate Dean, Office for Community Partnerships. Dr. Pohl oversees the school's nurse managed centers, school-based clinics,the faculty practice plan and all clinical arrangements. Before assuming this position she directed the Adult NP Track. She continues to teach in the NP program as well as mentors doctoral students and post doctoral scholars. Her area of research is on outcomes of care and cost of care in nurse managed centers. Dr. Pohl has 25 years experience as an educator and Advanced Practice Nurse/NP working primarily in nurse managed centers (NMCs) with underserved populations.

Susan Cohen Susan M. Cohen, DSN, APRN
University of Pittsburgh
First Term: 2003-2005

Susan M. Cohen is an Associate Professor at the University of Pittsburgh and a Family Nurse Practitioner with a focus in Women's Health. Currently, Dr. Cohen teaches research methods and serves a preceptor for graduate students in the research practicum. Previously, she was the Program Director of Nurse Practitioner programs at the University of Pennyslvania, University of Texas-Houston and Yale University. She is the President of the Society of Menstrual Cycle Research, a multidisciplinary association focusing on research from menarche through menopause. Her research is focused on the examination of the efficacy and mechanisms of action of complementary and alternative therapies for improvement in menopausal quality of life.

Rosanne Pruitt Rosanne Pruitt, PhD, APRN, BC
Clemson University
Second Term: 2004-2006

Rosanne Pruitt is professor and graduate coordinator at the Clemson University School of Nursing. Dr. Pruitt teaches advanced assessment and coordinates the final NP practicum in the graduate program as well as community health nursing to undergraduate students. Her clinical practice as a FNP is in conjunction with the Sullivan Center, an academic nursing center, in a variety of outreach sites. Rosanne works with the Healthy People 2010 coalition and substance abuse prevention in middle schools. Research areas include NP autonomy, health policy and evaluation.

Michelle Beauchesne Michelle Beauchesne, DNSc, RN, CPNP
Northeastern University
First Term: 2003-2005

Dr. Beauchesne is an Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Primary Care Specialization at Northeastern University in Boston. She has been a pediatric nurse practitioner caring for children and families with developmental disabilities since 1979. She has been NONPF's representative to the National Coalition of Health Professionals for Education in Genetics (NCHPEG). Dr. Beauchesne is a Past President of the Association of Faculties of Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Programs (AFPNP)and also of the Nursing Division of the Association on Mental Retardation (AAMR).

University of Northern Colorado
First Term: 2003-2005

Dr. Blair is a professor at the University of Northern Colorado and  is coordinator of the graduate Family Nurse Practitioner program.   She currently holds a faculty and clinical appointment at North Colorado Family Practice Residency Training Program.  Her research interests include interprofessional team practice and faculty practice models.

Quannetta T. Edwards, DNSc, WHCNP, FNP
Howard University
First Term: 2005-2007

Dr. Edwards is the Nurse Practitioner Program Coordinator and Chairperson, Graduate Studies at Howard University in Washington, DC.  She has been a certified nurse practitioner since 1977 with specialties and certification in "women's health" and family.  She maintains and active clinical practice as a NP at a military health care facility and within a community clinic.  She is currently learning genetic research as the Uniformed Services University in conjunction with the National Institute of Health.  Dr. Edwards has completed genetic online training via Cincinnati's Children's Hospital and the National Institute of Health, National Institute of Nursing Research, the Summer Genetics Institute.

Rush University
First Term: 2004-2006

Ruth Kleinpell is an Associate Professor in Adult Health Nursing in the College of Nursing at Rush University Medical Center. She has been an acute care nurse practitioner since 1995 and maintains a current practice at Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center in Chicago Illinois. Her current research interests include sepsis in elderly patients, telehealth, APN outcomes, and the acute care NP role. She serves on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Critical Care and Critical Care Nursing Clinics. She is a contributing writer to The Nursing Spectrum and also serves as the National Sepsis Education Curriculum Consultant for Eli Lilly.

Gayla Jewell, PhD, RNC, NP
Grand Valley State University
First Term: 2005-2007

Dr. Jewell is an Assistant Professor in the Kirkhof College of Nursing and Coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Nicaragua Initiative in the Padnos International Center at Grand Valley State UniversityDr. Jewell has an MSN with emphasis in theory and content development and family therapy.  She is certified as a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner.  Her PhD is in Sociology, majoring in health and well-being, research emphasis in interorganizational collaboration and prostituted women.  Dr. Jewell co-founded the Nursing Center for Global Health in the Kirkhof School of Nursing.  In that capacity, the largest project was the Nicaragua Project.  For over 5 years, in partnership with the Miraflor community in the Nicaragua, the Ministry of Health, and the medical and nursing schools of the Autonomous University of Nicaragua, she lead undergraduate and graduate nursing student and faculty as they staffed Health Brigades twice a year to this underserved area.  In 2004, this project evolved into the Interdisciplinary Nicaragua Initiative an academic and community health and development initiative that involves collaborative partners.

Debra J. Brown, PhD, RN, CFNP, CANP
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
First Term: 2005-2007

Dr. Brown has a BSN, MSN, Post Master's certificate in teaching and PhD in nursing.  She is currently the Coordinator of the Family Nurse Practitioner Program at UNC-CH.  Dr. Brown has been a nurse practitioner for 16 years and is certified as both a family and an adult nurse practitioner.  Her NP clinical experiences have included urgent care, primary care, and home health care.  She is actively involved in assuring the quality of NP education by monitoring her current academic program, practice guidelines and trends, competencies, state and national regulations, and advocating for changes when necessary.  She is developing in the area of policy and has been selected as a 2005 Department of Health & Human Services' (DHHS) Primary Health Care Policy fellow.

Jamesetta Newland Jamesetta Newland, PhD, APRN, BC, FNP
Pace University
Second Term: 2004-2006

Dr. Newland serves as the Director of Clinical Practice and Primary Health Care Associates (PHCA) at Pace University. PHCA is a practice group for faculty and students at university and community-based sites.  She formerly served as the Director of Pace University's Health Care Unit, consisting of nurse-managed centers serving three campuses.  She serves on the Editorial Boards of the American Journal of Nursing and the Nurse Practitioner.  Dr. Newland's research interests are with sickle cell disease and genetics for nursing.  She maintains a part-time clinical practice as a family nurse practitioner.
