NONPF Establishes Archives at the University of Virginia

The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) has signed an agreement with the University of Virginia’s Center for Nursing Historical Inquiry to establish the organization’s permanent archives.  The archives will include NONPF’s historical records and will further establish the significant legacy nurse practitioner faculty members have had in the nurse practitioner movement.   The archiving of materials is underway, and an inaugural reception for the archives was held on for April 14, 2000 in conjunction with NONPF’s 26th Annual Meeting.

The NONPF Board and interested members attended the dedication ceremony at the University of Virginia.  Jeannette Lancaster, PhD, RN, FAAN, Dean of the UVA School of Nursing, hosted the reception at her residence located adjacent to the Rotunda on the Lawn of the university.  Barbara Brodie, PhD, RN, FAAN, Director of the Center for Nursing Historical Inquiry, and Susan Swasta, PhD, MILS, Archivist, coordinated the dedication ceremony and have worked with the Dr. Elizabeth Abel and the NONPF Archives Committee throughout the donation process.  As well, Dr. Swasta prepared a pictorial exhibit for the ceremony depicting scenes from previous conferences and photos of former leaders of the organization.

Center for Nursing Historical Inquiry

The Center for Nursing Historical Inquiry was selected by NONPF as the permanent site for the archives because of its devotion to the preservation of the rich heritage of the nursing profession.  The Center serves as the repository of scholarly papers, letters, and photographs related to nursing.   In addition to NONPF’s archives, the Center houses the collection of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Associates and Practitioners and papers of other nursing organizations and individuals.  Dr. Barbara Brodie serves as Director of the Center for Nursing Historical Inquiry.   For additional information about the Center, please visit their web site.

Fundraising Campaign

NONPF invites all individuals interested in nurse practitioner education, nursing history, and/or scholarly research to support this initiative.  NONPF is initiating a fundraising campaign to support the expenses of archiving the NONPF collection, and we welcome individual contributions.  To contribute to this valuable activity, please send payments directly to the Center and indicate that the donation is for the NONPF archives.  Forward payments to:
