NONPF MOVES TO ADAPT FOR HEALTHCARE CHANGE:
Domain and Core Competencies Standards Revised

Washington, DC---As the rapidly evolving healthcare environment causes change in both nursing practice and nursing education, the Board of Directors of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) has taken action to adapt its key publications. As a result, NONPF has revised its Domains and Core Competencies for Nurse Practitioner Practice to meet this change.

Recognizing that practice changes necessitate modifications to the competencies to maintain their timeliness, the NONPF Education Committee has set forth a process of revision and validation in 2000. The newly revised core competencies including the updating of the 1995 version to reflect the current nature of nurse practitioner practice. M. Katherine Crabtree, DNSc, ANP, chairperson of the NONPF Education Committee, stated that “Aside from general refinements of skills described in the previous version, this new edition includes a new domain that emphasizes the need for culturally competent care. In light of the increasing demands on nurse practitioners, this new edition helps to clarify the role of nurse practitioner practice in the changing health care system.”

The NONPF Board of Directors voted to release the revised domains and core competencies in 2000 to assist nurse practitioner educational programs in updating their curricula. The NONPF Education Committee is undertaking a revision of the entire Curriculum Guidelines and Program Standards in preparation for a new edition in 2001.

Copies of the newly revised Domains and Competencies for Nurse Practitioner Practice are available for purchase from NONPF. See the publications page for details on ordering this new publication, or contact the national headquarters at 202-289-8044.
