Project Overview

In March 2007, NONPF convened a National Panel including representatives of APRN stakeholder organizations and additional content experts to identify curriculum content for APRN education relative to emergency preparedness.  Funding received from the National Nurse Emergency Preparedness Initiative (NNEPI) at George Washington University supported the National Panel for a Washington, DC, meeting and conference calls to conducts its work of reviewing materials and identifying content resources for APRN curricula.  By July 2007, the National Panel concluded its work with the completion of APRN Education for Emergency Preparedness and All Hazards Response: Resources and Suggested Content.

Document Description

The purpose of this document is to be a resource to APRN educators and is not meant to be prescriptive.  It attempts to provide a framework that reviews the roles and opportunities for APRNs in all phases of disaster response: planning, event response, recovery, and mitigation.  The organizing framework of the document is an adapted version of the “Emergency Response Clinician Competencies in Initial Assessment and Management,”nationally-vetted 11 clinician competencies currently promulgated by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) in their use for evaluating Bioterrorism Training and Curriculum Development Program (BTCPD) sites.  The National Panel has delineated suggested APRN educational broad concepts and considerations for development of content within the HRSA competencies framework.  As well, the National Panel has developed a comprehensive list of Web-based resources available to support content development.

NONPF will be soliciting endorsements of APRN stakeholder organizations and others for this document.  Endorsements will be added to this page in the coming months.
